Walter Harding ( At – Large )
Walter Harding is a candidate for Councillor-at-Large in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Why did you decide to run for this office?
I ran for this office because I am a 35 year community volunteer and civic leader, a citizen of the year, I have 40 years of work experience and 50 plus years of life experiences and I feel that while I have gotten a lot of positive initiatives achieved off council I can achieve more if honored with a more official role as At Large Councillor.
I will be performing my duties as At Large Councillor on a FULL TIME basis that will benefit residents, business owners, visitors to our city and my colleagues around our council table.
I have the time , the energy and selfless spirit to work very hard for others and that will benefit all.
I will NOT abandon my city council early to run for any other political post. I do not appreciate when we as taxpayers have to pay for someone’s personal agenda and I will NOT ever be in conflict of interest as I will never put myself in a precarious position. I will NEVER betray the trust offered to me by voters. My constitution and integrity will not permit that.
What are the three main issues you’d wish to tackle if elected and why?
Three main issues I want to address are public safety, taxation and renewal of trust in politicians.
We all deserve a safe city to enjoy free from intimidation, property crime and repeat offenders. We all deserve FAIR taxation and to not be taken advantage of by jargon, innuendo and smoke screens. I will work extremely hard at regaining the trust of politics that has been eroded bit by bit for so many years.
How do you intend to work with your colleagues at City Council to tackle these issues?
I will work closely with my council colleagues on these three issues and with provincial government officials and elected MHAs to find collaborative solutions. I will also contact neighbouring communities and similar sized municipalities to discuss their best practices, strategies and policy options that have been beneficial to their community. I will be relentless in finding solutions.
Where do you see St. John’s in four years?
Where do I see our City of St. John’s in four years?
Recovering.
Thriving.
Healing.
Supporting.
I want to help to get our magnificent city back to where it belongs. I hope it’s as a member of council but if it’s not then I’ll do my very best from outside council like I have for the past 35 years.
I love my city.
That will never change.
