Tom Davis ( Ward – 4 )

Tom Davis is a candidate for Councillor at Ward-4 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Why did you decide to run for this office?

I first put my name forward because I care deeply about this city and the people who live here. As a small business owner for over 30 years and a lifelong community volunteer, I’ve seen both the opportunities and the challenges our city faces. When the Ward 4 seat opened in 2024, I felt it was time to bring that experience into council and to make sure residents had a voice that put people before politics. Since being elected, I’ve worked hard to keep the commitments I made — advocating for responsible spending, safer streets, and stronger community support. Running again is about continuing that work and ensuring Ward 4 has a councillor who’s accessible, accountable, and focused on results.

What are the three main issues you’d wish to tackle if elected and why?

First, fiscal responsibility — families are already feeling the pressure of rising costs, and the city needs to manage spending carefully so taxes remain fair while services stay strong.

Second, housing — we’re in the middle of a housing crisis, and the city has a role to play by streamlining building processes, removing barriers, and supporting more affordable options for seniors, families, and people on fixed incomes.

Third, safety and climate resilience — residents want safer streets, but we also need to prepare for the bigger challenges like flooding, wildfires, drought, and hurricanes. These aren’t distant problems anymore — they’re here, and we need to build a city that can stand up to them.  Continued action on traffic calming and addressing the upstream causes of social decline needs to be our community's priority.

How do you intend to work with your colleagues at City Council to tackle these issues?

Council works best when we listen first. My approach has always been to come to the table with facts, a clear sense of what residents want, and a willingness to collaborate. I don’t believe in grandstanding or playing politics — I believe in rolling up my sleeves and finding common ground. Over the past 18 months, I’ve worked with colleagues across wards to improve snow-clearing strategies, implement strong action on affordable housing, and strengthen fiscal oversight. If re-elected, I’ll continue building those partnerships so we can deliver real results together.

Where do you see St. John’s in four years?

In four years, I see St. John’s as a city that’s more resilient, more inclusive, and more affordable. We’ll have made progress on housing by making it easier to build and renovate. Our streets will be safer and more accessible, and our climate plans will move from paper to action. I also see a city that values diversity and culture, where young people want to stay and raise families, and where seniors know they’re supported. That’s the future I’m working toward — a city that doesn’t just get by, but truly thrives.
