Brenda Halley ( Ward-2 )
Brenda Halley is a candidate for Councillor at ward-2 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Why did you decide to run for this office?
I just retired from a rewarding career as a social worker and would like to bring my skills and experience to city council. I have a unique perspective on many of the issues, including safety, housing and affordability, and I am accustomed to tackling complex issues with individuals and groups. I plan to be a full-time city councillor - responsive and accessible to residents.
What are the three main issues you’d wish to tackle if elected and why?
1. The environment and climate change - this has to be a consideration in all municipal decisions. We need to ensure that our city, and our planet, remains healthy for us and future generations. 2. Safety - our city needs to continue to be a place where all residents have a sense of belonging and safety. We need to remain connected to one another in our neighbourhoods and address the root causes of crime. And safety is not just about crime prevention - it is also about safety on our streets and public spaces. 3. Affordability - many residents are struggling with the cost of housing, food, transportation and recreation. Our city needs to work with various levels of government to address income gaps and costs of living.
How do you intend to work with your colleagues at City Council to tackle these issues?
I value diverse backgrounds and experiences, and am always open to hearing different perspectives. While a social worker by trade, I am also interested in business, land development, arts, sports and the environment. I look forward to learning from experts in these areas, while also bringing the expertise that I have after a full career in social work.
Where do you see St. John’s in four years?
I would like to see a city with a full range of housing options - from adequate shelters and transition homes, to affordable home ownership. I would like to see an increase in sustained modes of transportation, including improvements to metrobus, further expansion of the master bike plan, and more walkable/wheelable infrastructure. I would like to see heritage buildings and laneways protected, and arts & culture further promoted. I would like to see a more vibrant downtown with less empty buildings, and a community that resists marginalization to support and include everyone.
