Philip Barton ( Ward-2 )
Philip Barton is a candidate for Councillor at ward-2 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Why are you running for this office?
I'm running because I believe in the power of an engaged community. Far too few people are involved in politics, and I want to change that. I'm also running because our city has the potential to be a shining beacon for the future, but we are currently falling short. I want to help us reach our full potential.
What are the three main issues you want to tackle?
1. The Housing Crisis: We are in a desperate situation. We need to create more homes, and we need to do it fast. Our city is short by at least 6,000 units, and addressing this is my top priority.
2. Job Creation: People want to live here, but businesses aren't thriving. We need to build an environment where businesses, especially in technology and manufacturing, feel they can succeed. I will focus on creating the jobs of tomorrow, right here at home.
3. Ending Homelessness: I believe we can end homelessness. With as few as 600 beds, we could make a significant impact on this issue. This is a solvable problem, and I'm committed to finding a solution.
How do you intend to work with your colleagues on the city council to tackle these issues?
I will work collaboratively with my colleagues every day. I believe we are all on the same team, and it's essential that we work together. I will prioritize open communication and ensure our projects benefit everyone in the community.
Where do you see St. John's in four years?
In four years, I see St. John's as a leader in this country, a hub for technology and a model for solving the housing crisis. I see a city that is not only thriving but also a beacon for others to follow.
