Meet Greg Smith! He is running for Councillor at Large.
I’m Greg Smith. I was born and raised in Centre City St. John’s. I work as a Curling Coordinator and Instructor at Bally Haly Country Club. Additionally I’m a national level curler and have represented Newfoundland and Labrador on World Curling Tour. I have been a vocal advocate within the media on LGBTQ+ visibility and issues in our society and in sport. My passions are the outdoors, birdwatching, running, and I’m a jazz and 70’s/80’s music aficionado.
We asked Greg why he decided to run for Council:
Growing up in a low income family here in the heart of our city, I witnessed and experienced first-hand the adversity so many people in our community face.
As I got older, I noticed a lot of my friends who I grew up with have left for opportunities elsewhere. This has been a major motivator for me.
Working with all levels of government that fosters a vibrant city rich in talent and heart is so important. We face specific challenges in our cherished corner at the edge of North America, with recent economic uncertainty and an aging population. In a place as colourful and unrepeated as St. John’s, we can, and should, be an attractive and affordable place to start a career or business, start a family, and retire comfortably.
I believe I can bring a fresh perspective to City Hall as a pedestrian and transit user, as well as someone who has availed of community resources and groups over my life. I understand immensely the benefit of investment in key services.
I know what is ahead of us and I believe I bring a unique, inclusive, yet practical style of politics and policies. I want our city to grow in all aspects and I want us to never lose touch with what makes us St. John’s.
I pride myself on uniting people and finding common ground. When elected I will be a voice for all perspectives, listen to those with lived experience, and I will find pragmatic ways to tackle the issues and provide results!
I plan to bring Common Good, Common Sense and Common Ground to St. John’s City Hall!
