Lynn Hammond is a candidate for Councillor-at-Large in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Why did you decide to run for this office?

Building a city that’s truly inclusive and accessible is at the heart of my motivation for serving on council. I have lived experience with disability.  Representation matters for policy effectiveness. Ultimately, inclusion isn’t just about ramps and curb cuts, it’s about attitudes and accountability. When we design policies and practices from a place of understanding and respect, we can create a city that truly welcomes everyone.

What are the three main issues you’d wish to tackle if elected and why?

If elected, I would focus on addressing the housing crisis, modernize public transit and infrastructure for safer, more connected communities, and advocating for community well-being through increased funding that directly addresses the social and economic factors influencing crime. These priorities address urgent needs, help families thrive, and ensure St. John’s grows as a vibrant, inclusive city for everyone.

How do you intend to work with your colleagues at City Council to tackle these issues?

I intend to work with colleagues by fostering open, respectful dialogue and building consensus on key priorities. I will listen to diverse perspectives, collaborate on solutions, and seek input from community partners. By supporting evidence-based initiatives and focusing on shared goals, we can address housing, improve transit, and enhance well-being for all residents.

Where do you see St. John’s in four years?

In four years, I see St. John’s as a more inclusive, affordable, and vibrant city. Together, we can strengthen housing, support local businesses, and improve public transportation while making our neighbourhoods safer and more accessible. With thoughtful planning and community input, we can grow our economy and ensure St. John’s a city of opportunity and belonging for all.
