Blair Trainor ( Ward-2 )

Blair Trainor is a candidate for Councillor at ward-2 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Why did you decide to run for this office?

In 2008 I enrolled in a Child and Youth Care (CYC) with Addictions diploma program. I began that program while grieving my mother, who had passed away the summer before I started. That grief was not a hindrance, as it helped me learn to develop the empathy one needs to help others. Starting school in a state of grief was actually a healing experience–I met strangers through the program who became great friends, and I learned that there is a power in the stranger, as we all journey in different ways, only to become more familiar to one another, giving and receiving acts of kindness along the way.

What are the three main issues you’d wish to tackle if elected and why?

Number 1 is safety, as I will make public safety a priority by maintaining and expanding on the work of the Downtown safety coalition and the crime and violence prevention strategy.

Number 2 is tax savings, as I will research and explore  revenue sources from other provincial municipalities. Increasing property tax is regressive, as it adds financial pressure on seniors, low-income homeowners, landlords, and renters.

Number 3 is housing, I will work with the other ward councilors to share the housing load so that it does not always fall so heavily on Ward 2.

How do you intend to work with your colleagues at City Council to tackle these issues?

I'm a communicative individual that will firstly communicate with a listening ear, problem solve and come up with a solution. I have a strength based and solution focused perspective. This perspective has never led me astray, as it always brings me home and allows space for connection, reasoning for bridges and a wise mind for pathway creation.

Where do you see St. John’s in four years

I see myself bringing hope and a new way of leadership to Ward 2. I want to bring compassionate pragmatism to the Ward 2 council seat. I have no interest in rhetoric without action, and I have no interest in ideology not grounded in fact. What moves me is what works. I will work with anybody who has the best interests of the city’s people at heart, anybody who approaches the problems of St. John’s in honest good faith. Whether the problem is health, taxes, sustainability, or potholes, I promise to address the issues at hand with honesty and integrity and clear eyes.
